University of the West Indies (UWI – Mona Campus) (8km)
The University has produced students who have excelled in a number of disciplines such as the arts and sciences, business, politics, and sports. The university's cricket team previously participated in West Indian domestic cricket, but now participates as part of a Combined Campuses and Colleges team.
The UWI campus in Mona, Jamaica serves as the headquarters of the UWI system. Aside from UWI Mona, UWI has four major university centres: UWI Cave Hill (Barbados), UWI St. Augustine (Trinidad and Tobago), UWI Five Islands (Antigua and Barbuda), and the regional UWI Open Campus in the UWI-funding Caribbean nations.
University of Technology (UTECH) (8km)
The university was founded as the Jamaica Institute of Technology in 1958. The following year it was incorporated as the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST), and was formally recognised by an Act of Parliament in 1964. It was granted degree awarding powers in 1986 and a governing council and academic board were established. The college gained university status, under its current name, on 1 September 1995, and permanent provision for the university was made by the University of Technology, Jamaica Act 27, which became law on 29 June 1999.
From just over 50 students and four programmes in 1958, UTech, Jamaica has grown to become one of the top tertiary education institutions in Jamaica, with a student population of over 12,000. It now offers more than 90 programmes at the certificate, diploma and degree levels through its five faculties and three colleges.

University Hospital of the West Indies (8km)
The University Hospital of the West Indies is an internationally recognized academic institution with 579 beds which continues to facilitate the clinical training of health care professionals. This type A regional referral hospital has over time expanded its services to meet the health needs of the region. Cutting edge technology is used in the provision of services thus ensuring excellence in teaching, research, and patient care.
To ensure that the Hospital provides a high standard of care and services, many departments, research units and casualty services were established. These included the Tropical Medical Research Unit established in 1956 and a School of Midwifery in 1957... Medicine, Surgery, Paediatric, Radiology and Anaesthetic Departments were subsequently established. Between 1961 and 1963, the hospital opened five new operating theatres, a 75-bedded Paediatric block and a 40-bassinet nursery, which was attached to an expanded Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit. A four-storey block was opened with specialist beds for Orthopaedics, Otolaryngology (Ear Nose & Throat), and Ophthalmology with Dermatology and Psychiatric patients sharing the top floor. A 16-bedded Observation Unit was also established.
Kingston Public Hospital (6km)
The Kingston Public Hospital was first opened on 14 December, 1776. However, the institution was officially ratified on 21 December, 1776, when the Jamaica Assembly passed an Act (17 Geo. III c. 26) establishing the hospital. The hospital was originally located at the intersection of East and North Streets in Kingston, where a small hospital designated for slaves was converted into a male hospital and an old slave compound was converted into a female ward. Initially, KPH only treated patients from Jamaica’s white population, while the black slave population were treated on sugar plantations in what was then referred to as "hot houses" until emancipation in 1838, after which they began to be accepted by the hospital.
Originally, KPH was designed as an almshouse as well as a hospital, and later became a mental asylum. However, the asylum was relocated to Rae Town, St Andrew in 1850, where it eventually became the Bellevue Hospital. In 1859, KPH began offering 24-hour service seven days per week. In 1936, the then Senior Medical Officer, Dr Arthur Westmorland, separated surgical from medical cases for the first time. Four new operating theatres were built in 1962, in addition to the two previously built in 1928. In 1963, the KPH paediatric ward was transferred to the premises of the former British Military Hospital to establish the Bustamante Hospital for Children. Since then, KPH has evolved into the largest multidisciplinary hospital in the Government Health Service as well as the largest trauma centre in the public hospital system.

Public Transportation (20m)
In the capital city, Kingston, large, air-conditioned luxury coaches run regularly on popular routes. These are easily accessible and comfortable to use. Outside the capital, the public transport services aren’t as regular, or fancy. Most of us islanders use the buses, minibuses, and route taxis to get around and we’d love for you to join us!
For traveling between towns, minibuses are the way to go, and certainly make for an interesting experience. Along the way, you will see – and hear – the real Jamaica. But prepare to compete for a seat with luggage of varying sizes and contents. On longer trips, passengers almost become a community; somehow the shared experience of being so close to a complete stranger may create an unspoken bond.
Each town had a designated bus park, and although the destination stands are rarely marked, the conductor will find you. Keep your luggage close to you and be sure to check fares and destination with the driver before you board.
A “route taxi” has a designated course, pick-up, and drop-off zones. They are the cheapest and fastest way to get from place to place, and always one just around the corner. Just stick out your hand, and wave.
